Tic Tac Toe (Vocab Game)

This game is a great way to revise vocabulary. Basically, depending on the number of the words you want to revise, you draw a table like this on the board. You just write the initial letter of the word, and the part of speech in brackets.

Then you break your students into groups and want each group to find a symbol for themselves. Can be a star, a heart, a circle etc. After that, you start the game with one of the groups. They choose a word from the table (e.g. C2) and the teacher reads the definition of that word. They decide on the answer as a group and tell you. If it’s correct, you put their sign on that cell and write the answer. Then you do the same thing with the other groups. The actual purpose, as in the classical Tic Tac Toe, is to find three respective words in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal row. Each group will of course try to keep others from achieving that. For example, when one of the groups has found the word in C2, the others might try finding any word that is around C2. As the teacher, you might want to prepare something like this beforehand to help you with the definitions.

If you take the definitions from a dictionary, it might be a good idea to have a look at them and simplify if necessary because the definition might be too complicated for your students. And they might be demotivated if they find it too difficult. Have fun!
