Using mobile phones in class with Socrative

Socrative is one of the few online tools that actually let you integrate technology into your class effectively. It’s basically a student response system that you, as the teacher, can use to assess your students’ understanding of a certain topic and get instant feedback from them. First of all, you need to get a free account on socrative.com (you can use your Google account to do this). After signing up, you’ll be asked to name your class and you’ll see this screen:

Click on “Manage Quizzes” to make a new quiz – you can include true/false, multiple choice or open ended questions in your quizzes.
Add as many questions as you like and save your quiz. Now you have one quiz ready to use in class.

When you want to use this quiz in class, first tell your students to download the Socrative app on their smartphones. It’s available on all the popular platforms (i.e. Android, iOS and Windows Mobile). However, make sure the students install the students’ app (because there’s also the teachers’ app). When everyone’s ready, you open your teacher account on the class computer or your phone and tell your students to run the app on their phones and enter the class name (that you’ve specified earlier).

Now you should be able to see the number of students connected on the upper right corner. At this point, the students won’t be able to see the questions until you start the quiz. Before you start, you have some additional settings such as choosing to let students receive instant right/wrong feedback or not. You also have the option to choose who manages the navigation (you can let students move on to the next question or you can make them wait until you show them the next question.)

When everything’s set, start the quiz and the students can start answering the questions. You will be able to see the students’ responses instantly on your account. Your screen will look like this:

The quiz will go on until you stop it. When you stop it, you can save the results to review them later or you can download and view them instantly. Hope your students and you enjoy it!
